Pressures Adding Up

With so many pressures put on those who step into the spotlight, are stars inevitably going to have to crash at some point? Most celebrities have had at least one bad moment in the press. Look at Reese Witherspoon who doesn’t like doing nude scenes or showing too much of her personal life to the public and she is on national TV for yelling at a cop that he should know who he is talking to?

Do you think that crazy people become celebrities… or they become crazy because they are celebrities?

“I am so thankful that I am not watched all the time because I’m sure everyone would think that I am crazy because I’m kinda a weird person,” McKenna Keeney said. She feels that everyone in the spotlight would have rough  moments because magazines are trying to sell stories and crazy sells. “Think of how many  bad moments you’ve had in your life and now imagine if they were all photographed, blown out of proportion and published all around the world! I probably would go crazy from all the pressure.”

One thing that appears to be a pattern, is that if you start in the spotlight young, you’re more likely to struggle. In earlier posts, we have looked at some of the pressures of having famous parents. Being raised by nannies and having to travel all the time doesn’t foster a healthy growing environment.  Having to look and act perfect to reflect well for mom and dad adds stress too. Being given everything you could ever want without having to work for it also adds to the future diva. And never really knowing who are your real friends can add insecurity as well.

Abbie Nienaber doesn’t really like the stars put their kids in positions where they are heavily seen in the media. “Poor kids that are raised under all that stress. They don’t get a real childhood, you know? It’s their parent’s fault for not protecting them.” She goes on to say that it would be one thing for someone to choose a life of fame knowing the consequences and what they are giving up, but these kids don’t have a choice. Once you’re in the limelight, you always will be.

If we look at the list of now struggling child stars we see it isn’t short. Cute Lindsay Lohan went from the Parent Trap to trapped under house arrest, on drugs, with awful plastic surgery, in debt and probably going to jail. The Amanda Show has taken a turn for the weird as Amanda Bynes changes her face and mood every 30 seconds. And everyone knows of the infamous Britney Spears meltdown where she shaved her head because “she was warm.”

“It breaks your heart when your favorite star falls off the deep end,” Noami Blumenburg said. “I grew up with the Amanda Show and All That. I watched all her movies and I idolized her. And now I wouldn’t even recognize her on the street.”

Studies show that the more pressure there is as a child to be flawless the more likely they are to reach their breaking point or need to rebel.

Joining the Cause

Stars are all joining the cause of… causes.  Celebrities are now finding charities organizations to donate toward and advocate for, and they should. It’s one way to use their wealth and power for good…But is it for good or to look good?

From world hunger to child education, substance abuse and the arts, Look to the Stars (the top celebrity charity site) identifies nearly 3111 celebrities working with different causes internationally. We all know of Angelina Jolie’s adoptions and Oprah’s schools, but some stars are reported to use these organizations to boost their appearance (especially after a PR disaster), get tax breaks or just do it because they are required to by their contract.

CBS Cares has 50 charities that it openly supports, actors in their big tv shows are required to do public service announcements as a part of their contract. The organization does donate $2mil worth of PSAs but it’s really not up to the individual. According to Fox News, Lamar Odom is facing criticism for some financial discrepancies with his charity, Cathy’s Kids. After his mother passed away of cancer, it was made to raise funds for cancer research and underprivileged kids. Looks like he has spent the $256,000 that they are in the red, on two elite basketball travel teams instead. Lindsay Lohan has been using her charities to try to get some positive PR after her third house arrest and current rehab trip. Some of the charities she supports are the Red Cross, Hear the World and BID 2 BEAT AIDS.

But once in a while when celebrities are really passionate about a cause, it can be really moving. Check out Elle singing with an underprivileged children’s choir, seriously makes me cry.

Going Nude

It is always a big deal when stars go nude for the first time on camera.

According to Hollyscoop, there are celebrities that still refuse to nude scenes. Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz and Jessica Alba have talked about no-nudity clauses in their movies.

But many people think that a star needs to have done a nude scene before they can become really acclaimed. Even Meryl Streep and Julie Andrews have posed nude before. They say to give all for the art. When you play a character that is promiscuous, you often have to bare some skin, and it seems that all the good characters these days are a bit promiscuous.

The Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) explains that anything below PG-13 cannot show full nudity as well as any TV show that does not label itself as 13 and above.

But sex sells. HBO’s Game of Thrones has gotten a lot of comments on its extreme number of sex scenes and fully naked bodies. It shows the full front and back of women, though only men from behind. But the stars were aware of the hyper sexuality when coming onto it, and it has also sparked the show. And now it is not only a hit but winning Emmys.

In fact over 90% of the women winning Oscars and Emmys have shown the world what their momma’s gave them.

So it goes back to the question, do you need to drop dress to be the best?

Open Ties

Do Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett have an open marriage? With such demanding careers and three children (Trey, Willow and Jaden), we have always wondered how they have such a close relationship. Is someone being extra sexually satisfied?

“No, I think that people get that idea because Will and I are very relaxed with one another,” she said, according to US Weekly when asked about an open marriage.

But some still question what their marriage looks like when she comments, “I’ve always told Will, ‘You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay,’” she said. “Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.”

Open marriages are not uncommon in Hollywood. Many stars choose to keep options (and their marriages) open. Frisky’s Celebrity Gossip says that Rachel Ray’s husband is reported to go to a swingers bar regularly, as well as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s marriage was flexible toward the end (though we know how that ended up). At the beginning of her and Brad Pitt’s relationship, Angelina Jolie said she would be willing to be open. “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship,” she said. “It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterward. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.” Seems to me that infidelity is becoming a fad  in the star world. Maybe that’s why many of their marriages don’t last?

Not so Funny

The new big thing in Hollywood? People calling the police to celebrities’ houses saying there are  people with guns, when there aren’t. It just scares the celebrities and takes up the cops time. This new extreme pranking fad is called Swatting and everyone is getting tired of it.

The term swatting began when a 12 year old was arrested for sending SWAT to Ashton Kutcher’s house where his staff was held at gun point by the police until they realized it was a hoax.

Tom Cruise, Justin Bieber, Russel Brand, P. Diddy, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Paris Hilton and Steve Carell have all been some of the 400 “swatting victims” according to ABC News. Celebrities might just get a phone call by the police saying someone is supposedly at their house or they may be suprised by the cops bursting in through the door. The police don’t think the misuse of time and man power is very funny, but they are always ready in case there really is danger. “We are responding with the mindset of possibly encountering a subject or suspects with a weapon or multiple weapons,” LAPD spokeswoman Officer Sara Faden said. Many are afraid that it isn’t just one person making these calls, but many copycats trying to get in on the action.

Diddy’s stepson is thankful that the police took the threats seriously when he was “Swatted” and is glad they would be ready if something was to ever happen. “Of course it’s scary because that’s my home, that’s where I lay my head my head at night. I understand that police can’t take it light … I’m glad everyone responded safely and no one got hurt,” he said to TMZ.

I said what?!

In recent news, Lady Gaga got defensive when she was asked about her recent weight gain and made a comment about Adele being given more slack by critics. She told a reporter from Stylist UK  “Adele is bigger than me — how come nobody says anything about it?” Adele is known for not appreciating comments on her weight, especially since she just had a baby. And said previously in a 60 minutes interview after a negative comment, “I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.”

But the uproar of the argument has been found in the battle created between fans, who are putting words into their stars’ mouths. New Twitter and tumblr messages supposedly from the stars, have been falsified to appear to be retaliation to each other. The stars aren’t happy that their fans are stepping in for them and making them look bad.

Contactmusic’s Gaga representative says, “Lady Gaga does not approve of bullying anyone for their physical appearance, it goes against everything she stands for. A tiny handful of fans may be letting her down.” Lady Gaga and Adele were recently seen lighting up cigarettes together laughing, so it appears there are no hard feelings. As for the fans, they may be in the dog house.

Both of these memes are not real quotes from Lady Gaga and Adele.

Unrealistic Standards

One of the luxuries of being rich and famous is having hair and makeup people on speed dial. Though there are a few naturally stunning faces in Hollywood, many aren’t as flawless as they seem.

Having a 24/7 style team is a given for most stars since they are expected to be photographed every time they walk out their door. It’s understandable with the pressure they are under to want to look good for all the cameras, BUT it gives the rest of us an unrealistic standard to try to meet. No one can be that beautiful all the time, not even them. Hours every day are spent in hair and makeup, and then they are Photoshopped to look even better.

We base our self-image on how we feel we compare to what society thinks is desirable. And society is saying these celebrities define that “desirable.” People just don’t realize they can never keep up and it ruins their self-esteem.  BBC Health says that low self-esteem can cause anxiety and depression. Experts say that they can lead to eating disorders, sexual promiscuity, isolation, even criminal activity.

The reality of it all is that these stars aren’t as different from us as we make them to be, but we force them into this false image because we watch them all the time. Then we compare ourselves to these unreal people and feel bad because we can’t compete with them. But it isn’t cheap being flawless.

Seriously, watch this Dove Evolution Commercial of a supermodel getting ready for a billboard campaign. It will blow your mind.
