This last week Mark Balelo of the new hit series Storage Wars died and it was just announced that it was a suicide. People.com (People Magazine’s website) said he “died after inhaling carbon monoxide and car exhaust fumes; he was said to have been discovered by one of his employees in the garage of his auction house.” Descriptive details of the suicide were given in multiple sites similar to People.com. Unfortunately celebrity suicide is something that isn’t uncommon, but often in average print news, suicide is addressed very carefully even fragilely. Reportingonsuicide.org says this is because there is a high chance of copy cat suicides especially if given exact details on how to do it. Also people wish to be respectful to the family, since it is a self inflicted death. But with celebrity suicide, people seem to think that they have the right to the gory details. So I hope to look at why we treat their suicides differently and why there are higher numbers of suicide in celebrities.
